Tourism Minister Khaunte fulfills assembly assurance, reviews Kharewada Beach restoration

Vasco, August 5, 2025: Reinforcing the commitment made on the floor of the Goa Legislative Assembly, Tourism Minister Shri Rohan A. Khaunte has initiated efforts for the revival and promotion of Kharewada beach as a tourism destination. On Saturday, the Minister visited the site along with Vasco MLA Shri Krishna Daji Salkar, Director of Tourism Shri Kedar Naik, Councillor Smt. Shami Salkar, and departmental officials reviewed the current state of the beach and discussed a comprehensive development strategy. The site inspection was carried out within a week of the assurance made in the Assembly.

The team took stock of the accumulated waste, infrastructural challenges, and environmental concerns currently affecting the area.

Tourism Minister Shri Rohan A. Khaunte stated, “Last year, MLA Shri Krishna Daji Salkar had raised concerns about Kharewada beach cleanliness, and we ensured that these were addressed by including them in the scope of our  beach cleaning operations. While taking the local fishing community—the Niz Goenkars—into confidence, we have highlighted the importance of making them more responsible and aware, so that our pristine beaches remain clean and well-maintained. Tourism is a key contributor to the economy and creates additional
livelihood opportunities for locals.”

The Department of Tourism is working on a phased and sustainable approach for the development of Kharewada beach. The focus will be on restoring the beach’s natural character while simultaneously creating opportunities for local employment through tourism-linked activities. Plans also include addressing essential civic issues such as sewage and solid waste management in coordination with relevant authorities.

A detailed action plan will be prepared in consultation with local stakeholders (fishing community), ensuring that community involvement remains central to the process. The restored beach is expected to serve not only as a recreational space but also as a community gathering point during festivals and local events.

This initiative aligns with the state’s broader vision to promote regenerative and community-driven tourism, aimed at inclusive growth and responsible destination development.
