Vedanta Sesa Goa’s Project ‘Uday’ Aims at Setting Benchmarks in Sustainable Marine Logistics

Vedanta Sesa Goa’s River Fleet Shipping (RFS) Division has integrated solar power for running core marine logistics as part of its Project ‘Uday’. With the successful commissioning of the solar-powered energy system for auxiliary load management on the barge MV ‘Mogri’, the RFS is now in the process of adopting the tech at a larger scale.

The installation of the solar power module is powered by the high-efficiency 550 Wp Mono PERC (PE-550HM) solar panels & will help in sustainably managing auxiliary loads such as accommodation & navigation lighting and other onboard energy needs.

Mr. Nitesh Samant, CEO – River Fleet Shipping, added: “Project ‘Uday’ is an important milestone in our vision to create a sustainable logistics ecosystem. The successful deployment of the solar powered module on MV ‘Mogri’ testifies to our commitment to constantly evolve & develop scalable, high-impact energy solutions. We are committed to expanding this model progressively across the entire fleet.”

The newly commissioned set up has the potential to significantly enhance energy efficiency & is expected to result in an annual reduction of approximately 6.53 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions per barge, which is equivalent to the environmental impact of planting ~300 trees. When scaled across the RFS fleet, the initiative is projected to deliver a cumulative annual reduction of 149.85 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions, contributing significantly to Vedanta’s Scope 1 emissions reduction targets.

Project ‘Uday’ is aligned with multiple global and national sustainability frameworks, including the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Decarbonization Strategy, the Energy Conservation Act, 2001 & the MARPOL Annex VI emission standards. The development reflects the shifting trends & a forward-looking approach to sustainable energy use in the maritime domain.
