Government provides grant; Carnaval committees decide float prize allocation: Tourism Minister
Porvorim; January 15, 2026: Hon’ble Minister for Tourism, Shri Rohan A. Khaunte, informed the House during the ongoing Winter Session of the Goa Legislative Assembly that the Government provides a consolidated grant to the Carnaval committees, after which the committees independently decide the allocation of prize money for various floats.
He stated that there are different categories of floats for which prize money is awarded, and the distribution of amounts within these categories is determined by the respective committees and not by the Government.
The issue was raised during the Calling Attention motion by MLA, Curchorem, Shri Nilesh Cabral, and MLA, Quepem, Shri Altone D’Costa who sought an increase in the prize money awarded to Carnaval floats.
The Minister further stated that the questions raised by the Hon’ble MLAs have financial implications and, therefore, the matter will be discussed with the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Dr. Pramod Sawant, following which a decision will be taken regarding an increase in the grants. He also informed that the grant amount has been increased over the years.
