Calls for collective responsibility, waste segregation and cleaner surroundings ahead of Independence Day

Socorro, August 14, 2026: Hon’ble Minister for Tourism, and Porvorim MLA Shri Rohan A. Khaunte today inaugurated the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) Shed at Socorro, marking another step towards strengthening waste management and keeping the village clean and green. He also launched the Village Panchayat Socorro’s waste collection service on wheels, aimed at improving the collection of waste from open areas and ensuring cleaner public spaces.

Speaking at the inauguration, Shri Khaunte said that keeping the surroundings clean is a shared responsibility of the local administration as well as citizens. Recalling the efforts undertaken by the Socorro Panchayat since 2008, he said the Panchayat had initiated door-to-door garbage collection and has continued to work towards better waste management in the area.

“Keeping our surroundings clean makes our environment beautiful. The Panchayat has a responsibility to keep the area clean, but people also have an equally important role to play by segregating their waste at home and handing it over responsibly,” Shri Khaunte said.

He said the inauguration, held a day before Independence Day, carries a message of responsibility and freedom from garbage in its true sense. The new MRF facility will support the collection and segregation of different types of waste, while the newly launched vehicle will help collect garbage from open areas and contribute to cleaner public spaces.

Shri Khaunte urged citizens to segregate waste at source, avoid the use of plastic bags and support waste collectors who work every day to keep neighbourhoods clean. He also appreciated the Village Panchayat members, and everyone involved in the initiative.

He further said that an awareness programme being organised on Independence Day will demonstrate waste segregation at the household level and encourage greater public participation in maintaining a clean and green Porvorim.
