Govt to explore possibility of rolling out mechanised beach cleaning: Tourism Minister Khaunte announces in the assembly
Panaji, July 25, 2025: Hon’ble Minister for Tourism, Shri Rohan A. Khaunte, announced in the Goa Legislative Assembly that the government is evaluating the deployment of mechanised cleaning solutions on beaches across the state. This new initiative is aimed at strengthening existing manual cleaning efforts and ensuring more efficient maintenance of Goa’s coastline.
Responding to a series of Calling Attention motions raised in the Goa Legislative Assembly regarding beach cleanliness, Hon’ble Minister assured the House that the Department of Tourism is taking proactive steps to address the concerns.
The Minister informed the House that cleaning operations are being carried out on a war footing across all major beaches by the state’s designated agency. With the onset of the monsoon, the Department is ensuring that daily manual cleaning is underway to maintain hygiene and cleanliness, especially in areas impacted by natural waste deposition, including beach vomit.
Inputs from MLA Deviya Rane and MLA Jennifer Monserrate will be taken into consideration as the Department works towards an effective and sustainable resolution, stated Minister.
With regard to Kharewada Beach, the Minister stated that he has asked the local MLA to accompany him for an on-site assessment. Given the presence of a fishing community and boat parking in the area, the Minister stated that there is a need to relocate the community, followed by a comprehensive clean-up of the beach to ensure better upkeep and utilisation of the space.
