Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Goa Mourns Shirgaon Stampede Tragedy; Calls for Immediate Probe
Panjim: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), Goa expresses its profound sorrow over the tragic stampede that occurred during the Lairai Jatra in Shirgaon, which led to the unfortunate loss of several lives and left more than 70 devotees injured. This incident marks one of the most devastating tragedies at a religious gathering in Goa in recent memory.
“We are deeply saddened by this heartbreaking event and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones. We pray for strength and patience for the bereaved and for the speedy recovery of the injured,” said Asif Hussain, JIH Goa President.
The organization emphasized that religious festivals are moments of devotion and harmony and must be safeguarded against preventable disasters. JIH called upon the Government of Goa to initiate a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the causes of the stampede, identify any lapses in crowd control or safety protocols, and take urgent measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The organisation also urged the state government to provide immediate compensation and support to the families of the deceased and those injured, and to review the standard safety procedures for managing large-scale public gatherings.
“This tragedy is a stark reminder of the need for robust planning, timely coordination among departments, and strict adherence to safety norms during public events, Asif Hussain added.
