
Night of courage: Drishti lifesavers and locals Save 27 fishermen in a rescue operation
Panaji; October 03, 2025: The Department of Tourism, Government of Goa, highly appreciates the swift and courageous action of the lifesavers of Drishti and local fishermen who came together in a late-night operation to rescue 27 fishermen from a drifting trawler near a rocky river mouth, at Mobor beach on 27 September 2025. Hon’ble Minister for Tourism, Shri Rohan A. Khaunte in the presence of Director Tourism, Shri Kedar Naik felicitated the lifesavers for their bravery and dedication, recognizing their extraordinary efforts in ensuring the safety of the fishermen at Paryatan Bhavan, today.
Despite the difficult conditions, the lifesavers responded promptly, monitored the trawler through the night and ensured that all 27 fishermen were brought safely ashore the next morning. Their teamwork and sense of duty prevented a major tragedy and once again highlighted the preparedness of Goa’s safety ecosystem.
The incident occurred late at night when a local resident alerted authorities about a fishing trawler drifting towards the sea. Despite darkness and challenging conditions, off-duty lifesavers immediately began monitoring the trawler, and a coordinated rescue operation was launched the following morning. All 27 fishermen were safely brought ashore with the assistance of backup teams, jetskis, and local fishermen.
The Department especially acknowledges the heroic efforts of lifesavers Shri Lovu Gaonkar, Shri Samir Gaonkar, Shri Satish Gaonkar, Shri Punu Velip, Shri Shashikant Jadhav, Shri Pankaj Bhute, Shri Meghraj Juvatkar, Shri Sunil Velip, and Shri Vishal Velip, whose dedication and quick response were instrumental in the successful rescue.
Hon’ble Minister for Tourism, Shri Rohan A. Khaunte , commended the efforts, stating: “This rescue reflects the bravery and commitment of our lifesavers and the local community, who went beyond the call of duty to save 27 lives. Such collective spirit is what makes Goa unique reinforcing our commitment to safety and service.”
Director of Tourism, Shri Kedar Naik , also praised the coordinated efforts, saying: “The professionalism and presence of mind displayed in this operation showcase the strength of Goa’s lifesaving network. The Department extends heartfelt gratitude to all lifesavers and local fishermen who worked hand in hand to ensure the wellbeing of the rescued.”
CEO of Drishti Lifesaving, Shri Navin Awasthi stated: Our lifesavers are trained to respond to emergencies at any hour, and this incident once again reflects their dedication to safeguarding lives along Goa’s coastline. We are proud of the team’s courage and quick response, as well as the support extended by the beach police and local fishermen. This collaboration ensured that all 27 fishermen returned home safely.
