Panaji, February 2026– Rare compositions by early 19 th-century Portuguese composer Nicolau Medina Ribas were brought to life in Goa this weekend, as Communicare Trust hosted two well-attended performances in Panaji and Loutolim, introducing audiences to a fascinating chapter of European musical history.

Led by Portuguese violinist Eliseu Silva and pianist Olga Amaro, the concerts themed ‘A Night with Medina Ribas,‘ unfolded across two distinct venues — the Black Box at Kala Academy, Panaji, and the historic Figueiredo Mansion in Loutolim — offering audiences both an intimate recital setting and a heritage experience. The programme centred on Ribas’ works, manuscripts that were once nearly lost at his estate in Porto and have since been preserved and revived through dedicated archival effort.

The performances were marked by attentive audiences and a palpable sense of cultural exchange. Reflecting on the experience, pianist Olga Amaro said performing in Goa carried emotional resonance. “For us, everything feels very different, especially being on different continents yet connected through a shared history between Portugal and Goa. There is a deep sense of connection rooted in our past, and that makes this experience truly meaningful. We feel both honoured and responsible — honoured to be here, and responsible for bringing our culture to you with authenticity and respect,” she said.

Amaro also described the warmth of the reception they received in Goa and noted the significance of performing at the Portuguese-era Figueiredo Mansion. In a lighter aside, she added that the Panaji concert marked her first time performing barefoot. “I felt grounded, present, and deeply connected with the audience,” she said.

According to Nalini Elvino de Sousa, Founder and manager at Communicare Trust, both concerts were well received by the Goan audience. “I believe It was the first time a Portuguese composer was presented here in Goa.Eliseu’s explanations in between add up to the understanding of the pieces.Communicate Trust is very grateful to have such skilled musicians to close the 20th Anniversary of our trust,” Sousa said.

Violinist Eliseu Silva emphasised the engagement of Goan listeners. “The people were extremely attentive and deeply connected to the music. You could truly feel the emotional bond in the room — it was very strong. It was an incredible pleasure to perform here,” he said, adding that even audiences less familiar with this repertoire responded with genuine appreciation.

Addressing young musicians, Amaro shared a simple message: “If you’re doing something you truly love, keep doing it. What matters most is the happiness it brings you. Never give up on your love for music and art, because music connects people and speaks an international language.”

Organised by the Dona Paula-based Communicare Trust, the concerts formed part of the organisation’s continuing efforts to foster cultural dialogue through music, workshops and heritage-led programming, further strengthening Goa’s engagement with shared Indo-Portuguese artistic histories.
