75 Active Free Public Wi-Fi Hotspots Launched in Goa: Connecting Communities, Driving Digital Growth
Panaji, January, 2025: In a major step towards bridging the digital divide and empowering communities, the Department of Information Technology, Electronics and Communications has launched 75 active free public Wi-Fi hotspots across the state. This initiative aims to enhance digital accessibility, connect remote villages and public spaces, and support Goa’s vision of becoming a tech-driven state.
With a focus on ensuring seamless connectivity, each free public Wi-Fi hotspot will provide high-speed internet with speeds of up to 30 Mbps. As part of a collaborative effort, all 40 MLAs were asked to identify 3 key locations in their respective constituencies where public WiFi would have the greatest impact. This initiative extends connectivity to 20+ village panchayats, with another 75 hotspots going live in two weeks.
Furthering the government’s commitment to digital connectivity, Honourable Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant launched the 75 Free Public WiFi Hotspots from the Mantralaya, Porvorim. He emphasised, “Guided by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s Digital India vision, Goa is moving confidently into the future with Digital Goa. This bold initiative is about leveraging technology to empower every citizen and unlock new opportunities. The Free Public WiFi hotspots project will particularly benefit students.”
Speaking on the launch occasion, Honourable Minister for Tourism; IT, Electronics & Communications and Printing & Stationery, Shri Rohan A. Khaunte, said, “The launch of 75 Free WiFi Hotspots, offering high-speed internet at 30 Mbps, marks a significant step toward democratizing internet access across Goa. Through collaborative efforts, we are fulfilling our promise to the people of Goa, paving the way for progress. As a vital pillar of Atmanirbhar Bharat – digitalization and connectivity – enabled by these WiFi hotspots, are crucial in bridging divides and fostering development.”
The free public Wi-Fi hotspots are set to benefit students, entrepreneurs, tourists, and local communities by offering them access to reliable internet services. This move not only supports digital literacy but also lays the foundation for smart infrastructure and sustainable development across the state.
The Government of Goa remains committed to ensuring that every individual has access to the digital resources they need, empowering communities and transforming lives.
