Bhaangar Kalakusar Karigiri Wins Best Student Documentary at Goa International Film Competition

The Konkani documentary Bhaangar Kalakusar Karigiri, directed by Prachi Shirodkar, has won the Best Student Documentary Award at the Goa International Film Competition (GIFC) 2025.

GIFC is an initiative established to recognise and encourage emerging talent in the fields of art and cinema. With a contemporary vision, the competition aims to provide a platform for new artists and filmmakers to showcase their creativity and storytelling skills.

Bhaangar Kalakusar Karigiri was created as a college project under the guidance of Agnelo Raymond D’Souza at Don Bosco College, Panjim. Prachi Shirodkar not only directed the documentary but also narrated it and handled the cinematography, demonstrating a strong multi- disciplinary approach to filmmaking.

The documentary highlights the craftsmanship and expertise of traditional gold artisans in Goa. It features artisans such as Pranay Shirodkar, Rashila Shirodkar, and Virendra Rivankar, who share their experiences and insights into the gold industry, shedding light on a heritage-driven profession often overlooked.

Prachi Shirodkar is an artist and a graduate in Mass Communication, with an additional diploma in Architecture. She currently works as an art director and filmmaker, bringing a strong visual sensibility to her projects.

The film is edited by Mario Pimenta. To ensure wider global reach, the Konkani documentary has been subtitled in multiple languages, including Turkish, Japanese, and Spanish.

With its sensitive portrayal of Goan heritage and meticulous documentation of traditional craftsmanship, Bhaangar Kalakusar Karigiri stands as a meaningful contribution to regional documentary cinema. The recognition at the Goa International Film Competition not only marks a significant milestone for Prachi Shirodkar as a young filmmaker but also reinforces the importance of preserving and celebrating indigenous art forms through film.
