Goan Environmental Filmmaker Set for UK Debut
Goan environmental short film The Awakening has earned an official selection at the Frome International Climate Film Festival 2026, scheduled to take place on May 17 at the Cheese and Grain Theatre in Frome, United Kingdom.
The film, directed by Rameez Shaikh, was selected among 287 films shortlisted from 1,021 submissions representing over 180 countries. Now in its fifth edition, the festival carries the theme “Beyond Inspired: Together We Are Changing the World,” showcasing films that promote climate awareness and environmental action through cinema.
The Awakening revolves around a conversation between two friends reflecting on a planet in decline. As the story unfolds, the characters begin to realise that meaningful change starts with personal responsibility and a shift in mindset. Set against a decaying urban backdrop, the film addresses environmental apathy, climate change, and the growing disconnect between humanity and nature.
The short film stars Rameez Shaikh, Siya Chodankar, and Cyrus Fernandes in lead roles. It is written by Numair Khan, Rameez Shaikh, and Sharvi Dhond, with screenplay and cinematography handled by Numair Khan. Editing is by Varun Kashyap, while the background score is composed by Cyrus Fernandes. Production responsibilities were managed by Sharvi Dhond and Ebenezer Rajamanickam, with technical support from Boskon Studio.
Directed by 21-year-old Rameez Shaikh, a Mass Communication graduate from Don Bosco College Panjim and resident of Mapusa, the project represents a young wave of Gen Z Goan filmmakers, with the film’s core creative team all aged 21 and below. Before directing The Awakening, Shaikh worked as an assistant director and actor on Illuminate. The film previously won the South Asian Regional Award at the Don Bosco Global Youth Film Festival during its debut festival appearance.
The selection marks the film’s second international recognition and fifth overall festival selection. It has also been showcased at the Waves International Short Film Festival 2025, Mitee Short Film and Documentary Festival, and Urban Udda Short Film Festival.
As The Awakening continues its festival journey, the film reflects the emergence of a new generation of Gen Z filmmakers in Goa who are increasingly using cinema as a platform for environmental awareness and social commentary. Through independent storytelling and global festival participation, young Goan creators are beginning to position regional cinema within wider international conversations on climate change, sustainability, and the future of the planet.
