Goa has Sporting Talent but needs the right guidance, support, and backing: Mandar Rao Dessai
Panjim, Goa: The love for football in India, especially in Goa, continues to thrive despite the uncertainty surrounding the sport’s future. Former Indian national team player and current Chennaiyin FC star Mandar Rao Dessai said that passion for football is still strong and visible among the youth.
The 33-year-old Goan footballer emphasized that there is now much more support and opportunity for sports in India than when he began his journey. “When I started playing, there were challenges — lack of kits, infrastructure, and support. But today, everything is available,” Mandar said.
He stressed the importance of helping talented youngsters who might still lack financial or infrastructural support. “We all should come together to motivate and guide young players so they can become great athletes,” he added.

Mandar also highlighted the vital role families and communities play in shaping future sportspersons. “Support from family and friends — whether moral or financial — is crucial. I have represented my state and country, and I know there are many more talented players in Goa who just need the right training and guidance,” he said, urging that efforts to nurture young talent should start early.
Calling discipline and dedication key to success, Mandar expressed hope that Goa will continue to produce outstanding athletes. “Football runs in the blood of every Goan,” he said.
At a sports kit distribution event in Arpora–Nagoa, organized by the V.P. Arpora–Nagoa Panchayat, Mandar Rao Dessai thanked the officials and urged further development of local sports infrastructure.
