The most important festival for Goans is the Ganesh Chaturthi known as ‘Chovoth’. The preparations for this festival begin months in advance. During this festival, family reunions take place, as they return to their ancestral home to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi with grandeur, solemnity and devotion. The festival begins at home with installation of Lord Ganesh murti (statue). Families decorate a room by putting a “Matoli” adorned with flowers, seasonal vegetables and fruits before the God is brought home and placed on an altar. The women of the house prepare Modaks which is a favourite of Lord Ganesh, he said.
