From healthcare to community spaces, focus remains on creating a Porvorim that works for people across generations, says Shri Khaunte

Porvorim, Goa | 23 August 2026: Hon’ble Minister for Tourism and Porvorim MLA Shri Rohan A. Khaunte celebrated World Senior Citizens Day on Sunday with a range of activities focused on the health, well-being, safety, financial awareness, and social engagement of senior citizens. The programme was held at Porvorim Gymkhana.

Speaking on the occasion, Hon’ble Minister for Tourism and Porvorim MLA, Shri Rohan Khaunte said, “Porvorim’s progress is about its people and their quality of life. Our senior citizens have contributed immensely to our society, and it is our responsibility to ensure that they have access to healthcare, opportunities to remain active and spaces where they can live with dignity and happiness. Senior citizens should have opportunities to exercise, interact with others, learn, laugh and remain an active part of the community. Age should not become a barrier to participation, enthusiasm or enjoying life.”

Highlighting the healthcare initiatives being undertaken in Porvorim, he spoke about the importance of strengthening accessible healthcare facilities for the elderly, including the Physiotherapy Centre and Dialysis Centre. He emphasised that such facilities are aimed at addressing the specific healthcare requirements of senior citizens closer to their homes and strengthening the overall healthcare ecosystem in the constituency.

Underlining the development that Porvorim has gone through, Shri Khaunte said that the focus remains on building a constituency that works for people across generations, from children and young adults to senior citizens.

The program was powered by ‘My Memory Café’ and they demonstrated games and exercises to stimulate various parts of the brain that would assist about senior citizens.

A financial literacy session by Gavin D’Souza, highlighted the importance of maintaining organised personal and financial records, including information relating to bank accounts, investments, insurance, pensions, identification documents and other important household details.

A nutrition and wellness session by Dr. Kanhaiya Sirsat of the Primary Health Centre, Porvorim, focused on the importance of balanced nutrition and regular physical activity for the wellbeing of senior citizens.

The programme also reinforced the larger vision making Porvorim a progressive constituency where development remains centered on its people where every generation, particularly senior citizens, can live with dignity, security and a strong sense of community.
