3 Organ Donations in 2025, 11 Lives saved
The year 2025 has begun on a hopeful note for waitlisted organ recipients in Goa. The month of January witnessed 2 deceased Donor Organ Donations giving second chance of life to two liver, one heart, one lung recipients in various parts in India and four Kidney recipients from Goa.
Today, another family has come forward, demonstrating extraordinary generosity by saying yes to organ donation. A 22-year-old boy native of Kerala, working as ground staff at Mopa Airport, met with a tragic road traffic accident. Despite receiving the best medical treatment at Goa Medical College, he was declared brain dead.
The brain stem death certification was performed by Dr. Sanat Bhatkar, Assistant Professor Department of Neurology, GMC and Dr. Marina Vaz Assistant Professor, General Medicine, GMC.
The State Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) Goa Medical College has allocated the kidneys to 33-year-old and 24-year-old male recipients at Goa Medical College.
The liver was allocated by Regional Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (ROTTO) West to MGM Hospital Aurangabad.
“Organ donation is the greatest form of donation, requiring immense courage and generosity, my gratitude to the donor family for saying yes to organ donation in the time of grief,” said Prof. Dr. S.M. Bandekar, Dean, Goa Medical College and Hospital.
This marks the eighth organ donation under the umbrella of SOTTO Goa. SOTTO has allocated 16 kidneys and facilitated allocation of 4 Heart, 7 Liver and 2 Lungs through ROTTO West and NOTTO since its inception in 2019.
A Green Corridor was arranged by SOTTO Goa, with the help of Goa Traffic Police Cell, to transport the liver from Goa Medical College to Dabolim Airport. Excellent coordination between Goa Traffic Police and airport officials ensured the swift transportation of the organ.
Dean Goa Medical College has arranged for the mortal remains of the organ donor to be transported to his native village in Kerala for final rites.
