Relentless Rainfall Batters Goa, Causing Landslides and Water Logging
In Goa, continuous heavy rainfall caused landslides, water logging, and disruptions for the second consecutive day. The Indian Meteorological Department issued a red alert, predicting very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across most areas of the state. As a result, the Goa education department declared a holiday for schools on Monday as a precautionary measure.
The road between Ponda and Valpoi towns, located east of Panaji, collapsed due to the heavy rains. Panaji recorded the highest rainfall of 360.8 mm among the 13 gauge locations in the state within a 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am on Monday.
Tragically, three individuals lost their lives in north Goa when a wall collapsed on their shanties in Kundaim on Sunday. Additionally, around 150 trekkers were rescued from a waterfall in Pali, Valpoi, following a challenging four-hour-long operation amidst rising waters from mountain streams.
The national highway from Panaji to Belagavi was blocked by landslides in Ponda, while sections of the Mumbai Goa national highway were also closed due to mudslides caused by the heavy rainfall.
