From Local Club to Global Glory: Rameez Sumra Creates a World-Class Legacy in Table Tennis

Gujarat’s Table Tennis Star Rameez Sumra Wins Prestigious Global Recognition Award 2026

Mumbai (Anil Bedag): In a proud moment for Indian sports, Gujarat-based table tennis player, coach, and sports administrator Rameez Sumra has been honored with the prestigious Global Recognition Award 2026. The award recognizes his exceptional contribution to table tennis through competitive excellence, coaching achievements, leadership, and international sports administration. The Global Recognition Awards are considered highly selective, with only 5.8 percent of applicants receiving recognition from nearly 15,000 entries worldwide every year. Sumra’s achievement places him among an elite group of internationally acknowledged sporting personalities.
Rameez Sumra’s inspiring journey began in a small local club in Gujarat, where he first picked up a table tennis paddle at the age of six. Despite limited infrastructure, long travel hours, and the challenges of pursuing a sport overshadowed by cricket in India, he remained determined and focused. Through years of discipline and dedication, he represented Gujarat at state, national, and international levels, establishing himself as a respected name in the sport.
In 2025, Sumra competed at an international championship in Perth, Australia, further strengthening his presence on the global stage. His achievements were also recognized by the District Collector of Gujarat, who honored him with a Special Achievement Award for his outstanding contribution to sports.
However, Sumra’s success story extends far beyond his personal accomplishments as an athlete. In 2017, he earned the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Level 1 Coaching Certification and began a new chapter as a mentor and coach. Since then, he has trained more than 250 students through group coaching programs and worked personally with over 30 competitive athletes.
Among his successful trainees are Usha Rathod and Jeet Pandya, both of whom went on to win medals at international tournaments, highlighting Sumra’s effectiveness as a coach and motivator. His coaching philosophy is deeply influenced by his own struggles and experiences, allowing him to understand the challenges faced by aspiring athletes from smaller cities and underrepresented sporting regions across India.
Known for creating practical and result-oriented training methods, Sumra has become an inspiration for young athletes seeking opportunities in professional sports. His efforts have helped bridge the gap between grassroots talent and competitive excellence.
Apart from his contributions as a player and coach, Rameez Sumra has also played an active role in international sports administration. He served as Team Manager during the Commonwealth Games in Trinidad and Tobago, volunteered at the 2016 Asia Cup, and supervised operations at the World Table Tennis Star Contender tournament in Goa. His ability to contribute across multiple dimensions of the sport reflects his professionalism and commitment to the development of table tennis.
Speaking on the recognition, Global Recognition Awards spokesperson Alex Sterling praised Sumra’s remarkable journey and described him as a true example of the qualities the award seeks to honor. He noted that Sumra’s transformation from a grassroots athlete into a certified coach and international sports administrator represents a world-class contribution to the sporting community.
Rameez Sumra’s achievement is not only a proud moment for Gujarat but also for Indian sports as a whole. His story stands as a powerful reminder that passion, perseverance, and a commitment to giving back to the sport can create a lasting impact far beyond personal success.
