Supreme Court will Now Provide Updates to Advocates Via WhatsApp.
Advocates will be notified automatically about case filings, while members of the bar will receive cause lists promptly upon publication, according to the Chief Justice of India. The Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud revealed that the Supreme Court will now be using WhatsApp messages to provide advocates with updates on cause lists, case filings, and case listings.
A list of cases scheduled for hearing by a court on a specific day is referred to as a cause list.
In its 75th year, the Supreme Court of India introduced a new initiative with high potential for significant impact. The integration of Whatsapp messenger into its IT services aims to improve access to justice and increase transparency within the judicial system. Chief Justice Chandrachud stated, ‘Whatsapp messenger has become an essential communication tool in our daily lives, and this integration will strengthen our efforts in these areas.’ The announcement was made by CJI Chandrachud before a nine-judge bench, led by himself, as they prepared to address a complex legal issue raised in petitions.
He noted that from now on, advocates will receive automated messages regarding case filings, and members of the bar will be sent cause lists on their mobile phones as soon as they are published. “This new facility and service will lead to significant changes in our daily work routines, helping to save paper and benefit our planet Earth,” Justice Chandrachud added. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta commented on the development, stating, “This marks another revolutionary step.” Justice Chandrachud also shared the official WhatsApp number of the Supreme Court and clarified that it will not be accepting any messages or calls.
