Health Minister Vishwajit P Rane Stands with GARD: A Promise for Progress
The Dean of Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Dr Shivanand Bandekar said in the press conference that Goa Association of Resident Doctors (GARD) Association’s Executive Committee held a meeting with the Health Minister Vishwajit P Rane regarding their demands for enhancing the security of Doctors at Goa Medical College.
GARD Member said, “I would like to express my gratitude to the Health Minister for his support and cooperation in expediting this process. The GARD committee is committed to ensuring the safety of all individuals at GMC campus and surrounding areas, especially women.”
Health Minister said, “I emphasized our unwavering support for both doctors and resident doctors. We recognize the importance of the GARD association and empathize with their sentiments. Rest assured, we will not impose any undue pressure on the GARD association.”
“The sentiments of the individuals involved deserve our utmost respect, yet the incident in Kolkata regarding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s leadership has brought to light a lack of empathy. Despite her position, there seems to be a disconnect from the sentiments of the people. We stand in solidarity with the doctors, even in a place like Bengal where politics often takes precedence. It is crucial to prioritize humanity above politics, especially when addressing issues such as women empowerment and safety. As we navigate through these complex discussions, it is important to focus on understanding and protecting the sentiments and rights of women. This is a matter that requires thoughtful consideration beyond just political rhetoric.”
“Together with Dean Dr. Bandekar, myself, and the government of Goa, we stand in full support of the GARD association. They have presented us with a list of important security concerns that need to be addressed. Dr. Bandekar will identify a Doctor Relationship Officer within the next two days to work closely with the GARDs. In addition, we will consider all demands of the doctors across the state, be it regarding the increasing security system, placing security guards or CCTV surveillance, we will address all the issues and take it forward to the CM for implementation.”
“I will be presenting this document to them and providing an official commitment that we will bring this matter to the attention of the Chief Minister and the cabinet for thorough discussion. These issues are fundamental and require minimal effort, but the safety of female doctors is a top priority for the state of Goa. As both the Health Minister and a Minister of Women and Child Development, it is crucial for us to ensure that women’s safety is a paramount concern for the government. We must prioritize concrete action over mere words when it comes to this matter.”
“It is not sufficient to simply provide confirmation letters indicating receipt and acknowledgment of the issues at hand. It is imperative that we escalate this matter to the chief minister for further action. I am committed to advocating for the concerns raised by the station guard to be effectively addressed. I trust in the chief minister’s ability to prioritize and resolve these issues, as reflected in the detailed letter and supporting documents that I have submitted. I am resolute in my dedication to serving not just as a government official, but as a proponent of our government’s values and initiatives concerning the safety and security of women and healthcare providers. It is imperative that we ensure the protection of doctors and address any challenges they may face.”
“They have provided an assurance that I will address this issue by this evening and ensure that these commitments are upheld in the future. Through media channels, it has been highlighted that educating the public, especially women, is crucial for the betterment of society. They have also emphasized the importance of providing adequate protection to doctors who deserve respect and admiration. They have suggested that these issues be given due attention.”
GARD Member said, “I extend my gratitude for the kind words, verbal assurances, and written commitments provided by the Health Minister. We might consider calling off the strike, the decision of which will be given by 5PM.”
Minister Vishwajit P Rane said, “It is important that we prioritize the safety and security of the GMC and adhere to the demands. The press conference should not be centered around the working conditions of doctors but rather on addressing security and health issues. This concerns the representation of GARDs and ensuring the safety of healthcare workers. Thank you.”
